01
Where it fits and where it does not
Use these four checks before committing implementation time.
- Use it when
- AIRR-seq publication, repository submission, immune-repertoire exchange, federated discovery, reproducible analysis, and cross-tool interoperability.
- Limits
- MiAIRR compliance establishes reporting completeness, not sequencing quality or biological validity. The v2.0 transition, optional fields, ontology versions, germline references, privacy, and repository profiles require separate controls.
- Best for
- Immunology and Omics and Laboratory teams working across Plan → Acquire → Harmonize → Exchange → Learn + reuse.
- Maturity
- ScalingUsable now, but adoption or tooling is still developing. Pilot the exact stack first.
02
See it in the workflow
This view shows the input, the change the standard introduces, and the resulting output.
- InputWhat starts
Immunology and Omics and Laboratory source data, metadata, and local mappings
- AIRR · MiAIRRWhat changes
Use AIRR · MiAIRR as a pinned data model / schema across Plan → Acquire → Harmonize → Exchange → Learn + reuse
- OutputWhat becomes possible
A handoff the next system or team can validate against the same release
03
A concrete example
A repertoire study validates v2.0 model and tabular artifacts, supplies every essential and important MiAIRR field, preserves raw-sequence accessions and germline references, and tests repository and library compatibility.
Why it matters: Exposes typed receptor, clone, cell, sample, and subject context for feature construction, while annotation error, batch effects, repertoire sampling, outcome validity, and leakage remain external.
04
What it fits with
MiAIRR defines the minimum reporting elements; the AIRR Data Model structures those elements and their relationships, while the AIRR Data Commons API supports repository query and exchange.

Implementation starter
Start with one bounded handoff. Pin, test, and review it before scaling.
Define one handoff, its accountable owner, and the decision AIRR · MiAIRR must support.
Pin the exact version and companion artifacts: AIRR Standards 2.0.0 · released 2026-06-05 · MiAIRR 1.0.
Map one representative input to the required data model / schema artifacts.
Test the result against the canonical source and record every exception.
Preserve the source data, mappings, and review evidence before scaling.
06
Test the main limitation
MiAIRR compliance establishes reporting completeness, not sequencing quality or biological validity. The v2.0 transition, optional fields, ontology versions, germline references, privacy, and repository profiles require separate controls.
Run one representative end-to-end pilot and record exactly where AIRR · MiAIRR loses context, needs an extension, or depends on another standard.
Machine-readable output may still be unfit for analysis or ML.
Test the output for missing context, provenance, terminology alignment, time leakage, and the intended downstream decision. Exposes typed receptor, clone, cell, sample, and subject context for feature construction, while annotation error, batch effects, repertoire sampling, outcome validity, and leakage remain external.
